Chapter 6
Here we show more information on how perceptive Severo actually is. His tribe is a very noble race. They know the old magicks and they respect those abilities. Severo is an outcast from his tribe. A trouble maker as a child and a loner as an adult, he second guesses the ways of his tribe even though it could have revealed the truth.
Severo is Robin's character, but a wonderful addition to the story in what he represents. Lone wolves rarely happen in nature because wolves are pack animals by heart, they have great trouble surviving on their own. The same can be said for humans. Our instincts are to group together because... well, we're pathetic! We have no natural weapons, really. Our fingernails break easily and can only really be used as a defense against other humans and small animals. Our balance is terrible, our speed is laughable for our size. Alone, we'd be very low on the food chain.
However, there are human loners. Some who prefer to be alone most of the time, as I do, and those who are social outcasts and have no choice but to be alone.
However, there is a third group there. A group with a mental state often altered from the time they are very young. These people cannot see things the way others do-- their minds actually cannot understand normal social behavior. These people often turn into serial kills or abusers.
So that bring up another argument. When you go against nature and instinct, what can happen?
Now, there are many instances in the Nature of Nurture argument that stay being homosexual is against nature and instinct... however, just as wires can be crossed to make a person autistic, violent, whatever... the same can happen with gender preference. Many males are born with so many female hormones that they really are girls with male parts. It's been prooven over and over, and often forcing individuals who are born this way can lead them to suicide and self-loathing.
Choice VS Nature is a huge thing. What can it lead to?

If I had my choice, I would choose to live in the wild. When you wrote about all these things, I thought of how this and that affected me.
There are many things that affected me to want to live in the wild. I was a social outcast and I think that's the reason why I want to live in the wild and be alone. One other reason is becasue everything is being made complicated now by this world. You said so before, it was a long, hard work that took you to make TRLF, site and story.
Before, many people would drink orange juice after you squeeze it, but now we have all these purifaction chemicles and what not. A long time ago, people would probably just drink from a waterfall, but now we want this special thing that purifies the water and making it "okay" for human uses. People would probably just roast a deer on as stick over a fire and then eat it, but now we want to have dressings or other toppings to add to the deer and we would want to have it cooked to this temperature using an oven, heater, microwave, pan, pot, whatever!
Now onto the chaper, I would understand why Ellipses is annoyed, but like Drake, it's funny. *snickers* Ellipses is nothing like Eclipse, only his appearance. It'd be cool to see Eclipse annoyed but he's in perfect control of his emotions. *sigh* Severo however, I like to see someone like him. Wild, uncontrolled, and lets a kid do dangerous stuff. I wonder how Drake would reacte to the monster Severo was eating that turned unrecognizable. Would it be spicy and make Drake burn the whole tent down? It'd be funny to see how Ellipses would reacte to that..... Anyways, Severo is a great character but I would not understand why Drake said that Severo would kill him for stealing his arrows. I think he would secretly be very proud that Drake had the guts to do that, but I don't know his personality that well....

The arrow comment will be explained later It's doubtable that Severo would actually kill him, but these arrows are BEYOND hard to comeby and Drake stole his only set XD now asked, not borrowed... stole. And we imagine Severo to be PISSED about the fact that Drake would not only dare steal from him, but be able to as well.
You have a lot of thought an insight on this chapter. I do agree, to... in one point of time, it would be safe to drink from a stream or rost food on a spit. Now our natural defenses are at an all time low because of all the sterilization we do to ourselves...

such incite into characters that weren't showing who they really are or letting other in to know them really. I'm starting to see why Drake resents his parents so. They way you described the elemental arrows is so vivid that i could see them and almost touch them.
Choice vs. nature is and interesting topic. One that I don't completely understand, but will try to add my 2 cents anyway. I choose to be alone and surround myself with people at times I don't feel comfortable in a crowd even when it's people I know. I'm kinda anti social and when i choose to put myself into social situations I don't feel completely comfortable letting my guard down. But this topic isn't about me, that was just an example.
I'm not even going to get started on homosexuals and their rights because I do butt heads with some people i know over and it's a topic i don't like to talk about, along with politics and religion. It's part of being from Texas.
But, Wires can be crossed in individuals which is why we get people with down syndrome, autism, add, adhd, and all the other mental illnesses that im not listing because it can go on and on.
Anyway, I feel for Drake being raised by a homicidal phsyco, and distant parents. I wish Severo would just kidnap him since the two seem to get along so well.
Awesome chapter Ravyn can't wait for more. Going to start reading LMRIP tomorrow, I'm tired and have to get my daughter up for school in the morning.

Now come one come all to this tragic affair Wipe off that makeup, what's in is despair So throw on the black dress, mix in with the lot You might wake up and notice you're someone you're not |

Choice vs Nature...what an interesting arguement. This can go either way depending on the circumstances. Say for example going sky diving. The natural human instict is to not jump because it is imprinted into our minds that falling from heights like that will kill us. But the fact that we have been brainwashed into thinking that the canvas parachute and strings attached to our backs along with the thrill of the moment overrides that instict. We make the choice to jump out of that perfectly good airplane, even if it goes completely against our nature. Wait....isnt going up in the plane against our nature as well...or is our nature tied into our curiousity and lust for adrenaline. I just don't know!
Anyway, great chapter Ravyn and cannot wait for more! Great back story on Severo and Drakes relationship as well as more back story on Ellipsis' character as well.
Till next time!

I agree with you, Tryme. Those topics can be dangerous to discuss. I do so because... I got published, then I wrote Jesse's Story now I have everyone bugging me for my opinion... which can be fun, but has gotten be physically hit at conventions... which for some reason gave me such an adrenalin rush I started laughing. Like really laughing.. I bet they heard me on the third floor... pissed the guy off, but he was a mornon anyway "Slavery doesn't exist in MY country!" "You have your very own!? Lucky..." "AMERICA!" "Oh, sorry, you're wrong both in that there are slaves here and that it belongs to all of us. We can even adopt highways." "You're wrong." "...That's your argument, hm?" I wish I'd have had it at the time, I would have played a bit of BRANDED (http://brandedphx.com/)
And yes XD If Severo had kidnapped Drake he probably wouldn't be as mentally messed up as he is now.
You're right though! You included more examples than I thought of... I have ADD still even though I'm 21. Can't focus on anything unless I find it interesting and even then I have to do, like, 2-1000 things at a time or I get BORED... I see things that aren't there constantly and have been told I've done that my while life which could be wires being crossed or something else.
Like you said, too! You're a loner even though it goes against "nature" but who is it hurting, really? If you're happy that when then be happy! Society shouldn't force itself and its ideals on you as long as no one is being hurt. Just don't let go of those natural instincts. If there's a time your brain says "you need your friends NOW" get them!
Solark, that's a great example, too! As the saying goes "It's not the heights that scare me. Falling. Falling scares me."

It was a really good chapter, I got the feeling that Severo saw himself in Drake and that's why the bond between them was strong right from the start.
Your choice Vs Nature question.
I think that there is no definite answer to it and that it widely varies from person to person.
Oh and that picture of the dragon at the top of the page was really cool, I don't know who made that for you but that person really has a lot of talent, I can't remember seeing a dragon pic that I've like that much. Really cool.

Munchin, you hit is dead on! Severo does see a lot of himself in Drake!
The dragon in the chapter banner is from Dungeons and Dragons online. The one with severo and the red dragon was done custom for us, though! If you check the archieve for TRLF, and the fanart page, you can see all the art AND eho gave it to us if we have a link for them!
