 Chapter 8

Chapter 8

What does this chapter show?
3 things.

1) Chaucer can never win
2) Eclipse is a control freak who still gets played
3) Drake's a little brat ^_^

For my class, this chapter represented the Babysitter Syndrome. You know the legend? Babysitter is supposed to be watching 2-3 kids in a house, she's downstairs while she thinks they're upstairs sleeping when she gets a creepy call. "Have you checked on the children?"over and over. Calls the cops, they say there's nothing they can do but, if she insists, they'll trace the call next time it happens. Happens again, they trace it and call her back saying get out NOW, it's coming from inside.

This myth plays on everyone's fears. The babysitter represents anyone who lets things in life go by un-noticed. It's supportively a 2 story house with an alarm (in many versions there's a guard dog outside, in others there is an alarm and in most there are just locks everywhere that the parents go over with her just before they leave), and she's there alone with 2-3 kids of varying ages. The question brought out is "How could you not notice someone get in?"

The parents represent safety and responsibility. In newer versions of this myth, the girl is doing anything from gabbing on her cell phone and shouting at the kids to shut up and go to bed, to surfing the Internet posting inappropriate pictures of herself on myspace for her boyfriend.

"When the cats away..." type of thing. It draws on many parents fears about the unknown. This babysitter could be someone you know and trust, but what is really trust worthy in this world?

An important thing to note is that there are 2 main versions of this story.

Version 1. The baby sitter checks on the children at least once after they go to bed.

Version 2. Even after the call turns out to be from inside the house, she doesn't concern herself with the kids.

My favorite version goes with the girl calling the police and gets a man who tell her it's a prank and to call if she sees anything. So the girl calls he operator and gets a female (though in some versions it's a male...). This operator does her best to calm the girl down (even though at first she's more annoyed than worried) and tells her to check the locks and she'd stay on the phone with her while she did so. The girl checks all the locks on the first floor and finds them all locked. In the story, the windows upstairs don't open at all. The girl keeps calling back and getting the same operator and in between calls the operator is on another line with the police trying to convince them to go check on the girl. Eventually, the operator decides to trace the call herself and is confused when the number returns as being from the same house. In some versions her instincts kick in and she calls back immediately telling the girl to get out, in others she tells the police first and they are confused about if it's a fault in the system.

Heres my favorite separation between the stories... In the one version, the operator is beyond confused on why the number is coming up from the house and the police are, too, they try to make sure there can be no mistake in what is being shown and that the operator traced the correct call.

When they finally call the girl back, she's at the top of the stairs going to check on the children and runs out with the murderer on her tail, eventually getting her.

In another, the operator sees the number and calls the girl "Jenna! GET OUT!" tells her to run out of the house and to a neighbors without another thought. This saves the girls life.

How is that like this chapter? In my purpose, we have both Chaucer and Eclipse in the babysitter role. Chaucer fulfills the part where it's too late to go back. Everything you missed is long gone and now you're stuck in a bad situation. Eclipse represents the part that chooses to believe they know enough that nothing can go wrong.

Does that make Drake the murderer? ... yes. Freaky, no? In essence, he's got them both in situations they don't want to be in and while he's not in full control, he's still the one pulling the strings.

The major questions brought up in this myth are some favorites of mine... how did the man get in? Was he there before the parents left? Did they know about it?

Evil can be lurking closer than we all think.

Very very true. A woman can be married to a man for years, they do the same things they have always done the one day he snaps because she whistling while making dinner and he kills her.

But your right Drake is pulling the strings hes doing things that *gasp* many teenagers do. Play one against the other to suit his needs. Problem is he succeeded. Also, he took the wrong bird. Unless Celestina is suddenly not on Eclipses side any more.

One more noteworthy thing. please don't be angry at me for pointing this out I just didn't know if you noticed it. In Chapter 7 you said Drake was 10. At the beginning of Chapter 8 it says 5 years later making Drake 15 by those standards, but in the last sentence of the 2nd paragraph of the chapter it says he is 13.

Drake, being thirteen, would be the youngest hunter on the list to attend

Just thought i'd bring that to your attention. please don't ban me.

BTW I'm loving the rebellious Drake.

*snicker* Eclipse is like a little child too. He just loves messing around with Chaucer!

Drake, the murderer? It would make sense. He's like a puppet master and does he know he's pulling the strings?

lol, I'd never ban you for that correction! I honestly missed it! It's been fixed! Thanks for telling me!! It's such a huge error I'm shocked I mised it, but... hey, things happen! I'd rather you tell me about such major things than have it be missed and me thinking it's all fine only to have someone rude come up later saying "There's an error somewhere, FIX IT!" You explained why it was an error and where it was! That was very helpful, so thank you!

Trikari, of course he knows he's pulling the strings ;)

That's what happened to me once, so now I learned to keep my mouth shut in all circumcises and now I just speak out of curiosity or being asked to.

Do any of the other people have roles in the plot? I think that Chaucer is in a way the police. He is in the picture small but important (sometimes, forgive me). He realizes that something is wrong and that he tries to fix it. He is too late (but the too late part is not part of they myth).

That senario wit hthe babysitter is extremely creepy. But I do not think it would have been hard for them to enter unnoticed at all. I mean with all the technological advancements we have for security, there are still people out there smart enough and skilled enough to find there way around those measures unnoticed. Its really creepy when you think about it. No matter how protected we think we are....we are still vulnerable.

Great chapter! I love Drake playing with Eclipse....JUST WARMS MY HEART.

I wonder, how well would Beatrix cope with babysitting? As I wonder what would happen if Cinaed chose Ellipses to find Drake rather than Eclipse. Then again, I would wonder how Ellipses and Eclipse would reacte to the babysitter myth. `sigh` I wonder a lot....

*giggles* Yeah... the babysitter myth is one of those creep-out factors. You're right, though, Chaucer could represent the police, too.

ALSO! I'm so sorry someone got so angry at you for correcting something! ... TRLF is on a website I host. Editing mistakes are very possible and very easy! Same with the stories on ff.net and fictionpress that I have. I export the document, fix it, re-post it. No big deal so long as I know where the error is and why it's an error. The only time I can see someone getting upset is if the mistake is uncorrectable. ff.net, my websites and fictionpress are all constantly editable so no big deal.

Sorry it's taken a while. Munchy has little time for reading with writing, hosting a forum (which is actually very little work), work, and well, more writing.

I really liked this chapter, Drake really is a puppet master, like all teenagers he knows how to work his parents/carers. The bit that really stood out was that picture where Drake set the rug on fire. I loved it.

1)Chaucer turned and followed him. “You have been gone for three days! You left Daguerreo!
needs a quotation mark at the end

2)He added as an afterthought, as he sheathed his sword and attached it to his waist where it usually hung.
I'm not sure if the comma after afterthought should be there (but i dont think you need the comma)

3)Now, for instance. Eclipse hated those birds,
the period should be a comma

4) Drake quieted his voice down slightly, trying to become background noise, talking about hunting techniques, vantage points, which falcon would be best... location.
which falcon would be best (for the)... loacation

5)“No.” Eclipse said simply, finishing his 'a' and turning to face Drake again.
The period after the "No" should be a comma

6)“Yes?” He asked, turning a page point fully.
What is a page point?
